The Foundation Stage Unit
The Foundation Stage Unit consists of our Nursery and Reception class. It is accommodated in a purpose built Early Years environment with superb indoor and outdoor learning areas. We are a 52 place nursery with recently added provision for eight 2 year olds.
“The leadership of the Early Years Foundation Stage is outstanding. For example, the current provision for Nursery and Reception children shows that leaders have a detailed understanding of the needs of each individual child, and plan provision accordingly” (Ofsted November 2013).
We welcome children into the unit shortly after their third birthday due to an on-going rolling admissions policy. Children transfer to the Reception class within the unit in September of the year in which they will turn 5.
“Children form secure emotional attachments with staff and show high levels of confidence and independence. They benefit from a highly stimulating and challenging setting, where they are happy and enthusiastic to join in” (Ofsted July 2013).
||2 year old children are eligible to access the free entitlement if the family meets the Free School Meals criteria or if they are looked after by the local authority. Additional children will also be considered for funding during 2013/14 in order to build towards the extended offer to 40% of all 2 year olds in September 2014.
Children become eligible for the Entitlement for 2 Year Olds from the term after their second birthday. Eligibility continues until the end of the school term in which the child turns three; this ensures a seamless transition to the free Early Years Entitlement for 3 and 4 year olds.

|The 2 year old room is situated within the main nursery and is known as the Sunbeam room. The Sunbeam room has been developed to reflect a homely feel and is decorated with neutral colours and soft furnishings that reflect calm and nurture. The children have access to toys, resources and activities that are appropriate to their age and stage. Our little ‘Sunbeams’ develop in a caring, homely environment where their individual needs are met. The Sunbeam room provides a safe base for the Sunbeams but the children also access the main nursery. With support from their key person the children fully engage in the continuous provision that is provided in the main nursery classroom.||
|We aim to give all children in our Foundation Stage Unit an exciting, challenging and meaningful start to their learning journey with us. We plan children’s learning experiences in accordance with the EYFS (Early Years Foundation Stage) curriculum guidance and principles.
All children in the setting are recognised as individuals with their own personalities and interests and existing skills and knowledge. We strive for all children to reach their full potential in all seven areas of learning and development. This is achieved through practitioners having a wide range of experience and expertise and an excellent understanding of child development and how children learn.
The nursery provides a creative, discovery and play based curriculum. Children are encouraged and enabled to make choices about their own learning both indoors and outdoors. Through the learning opportunities and environments we provide, our children become active learners who develop strong enquiry and practical skills as well as becoming personally and socially confident individuals who enjoy learning.
We maintain detailed and comprehensive records of achievement for each child and these are shared regularly with parents and carers. Contributions from parents towards the children’s Learning Journeys are sought, valued and highly respected.
We value close and strong partnerships with our parents and carers and seek to develop them from the outset through:

•Welcoming parent volunteers with open arms
We are fully inclusive and are able to meet the needs of all children including those with identified special educational needs. Our skilled and experienced staff has a wide range of expertise in providing children with additional support. We also have established strong partnerships with health visitors, speech therapists and other external professionals all of whom work closely with us in the setting to provide early interventions and support for children with any additional needs.
